Outdoor Photographer bio picture
  • I'm an outdoor and lifestyle photographer based half the year in Colorado and half the year in Europe. My images of climbing, cycling, scuba diving, bouldering and other human powered adventure sports have appeared in magazines, newspapers and books worldwide. From 2009 to 2011 I was an Our World Photographer for Sigma Photo, one of the largest camera companies on the planet, and my outdoor imagery appeared in Sigma ads around the globe.

I also work as a traveling wedding photographer. My studio, Dreamtime Images, has won nearly two dozen international photography awards, and has appeared in countless industry publications. As you might have guessed, I named it after Fred Nicole's Dreamtime, an iconic V15 boulder problem in Cresciano, Switzerland.

This blog will serve as a journal of my adventures. You'll see skiing and snowboarding, rock and ice climbing, bouldering, cycling, underwater worlds, and nature, wildlife and travel. Have fun, Digg me, join me on Facebook, or just enjoy the pictures. Be sure to drop an email to say "Hi" or ask a question -- I'm happy to help with beta on climbing areas, travel destinations, shooting tips, camera gear, or whatever else I can.

Urban Skiing – Published in Germany

Some fun ski images I shot last winter in Norway were just published in Fit for Fun, Germany’s biggest sports and fitness magazine. Estimates put it at 2.09 million readers. These images came from two separate shoots, one in a snowstorm at a school in downtown Molde, and another under a bridge on the outskirts of town. Here’s the cover, for reference. I didn’t shoot it but it might help people track down the issue. Be sure you can read German — and if you can, let me know what the article says!

Cover, Learning to Climb Indoors | Rock Climbing Photography

Eric Hörst, basically the world’s most published expert on training for climbing, just sent off his newest book, Learning to Climb Indoors, to the publisher. I shot the cover on which Rannveig appears.

Stoked to be working with Eric after reading his books for so many years. He is the master — if you’re serious about the sport, you have to read some of his books. My favorites are Maximum Climbing and Training for Climbing.

Canadian Running | Photos of Trail Running in Norway

It’s funny that what follows came to my attention today — it’s a story about running while on vacation that was published recently in Canadian Running Magazine. An image I shot of Rannveig was used on the opening page to illustrate a section about running in Norway. Here’s the cover — I did not shoot the picture, but it’ll help you find the issue if you’re so inclined.

The story struck a chord becuase we just wrapped up a short anniversary trip to Rome, and we explored the streets every morning on incredible urban runs, watching the city awaken and come to life. One day we took a 12k around the Vatican, the next a 10k around the Colusseum, the next a 12k through Rome’s northern end, so on and so on. On my iPhone I had a GPS-enabled offline map of the city, so when we got lost I pulled out the phone and tracked us down. I can’t imagine a better way to see Rome than running through hidden alleyways as shopkeepers open their doors and welcome a new day. The streets are super narrow, and every so often you can peer down a long straight road and catch a fleeting glimpse some 2,000 year old landmark.

What a place.

Anyway, here’s the opening page.

Pictures of the northern lights – tripping on nordlys

Got an email today telling me to watch out for the Northern Lights — Dad, thanks for the tip!

I just spent half an hour out in a field just staring up at the sky. What a world we live in.

steve from bristol wedding photographer - So beautiful. I plan to see them one day when I find myself far enough north, until then photos like this will have to do! I imagine it’s one of those things where seeing it with your own eyes must be infinitely more incredible than any photograph could be though. Would you agree?

Josh from LA Wedding Photography - Amazing picture! The green sky make the image seem other-worldly. Great photography – thanks for posting this image.

Tom from Above All Images - Stunning! Would be even better if you could stay in one of these glass igloos in Finland: http://pinterest.com/pin/69876231688386193/
Now that would be something else!

2012 Women of Climbing Calendar

Well, it’s official: Rannveig is Miss June this year in Sharp End Publishing’s 2012 Women of Climbing calendar. Pick it up either on the Sharp End site or here on Amazon.com.

This year’s shot features her on a great climb called Hull I Himmelen, 5.13a, at a crag called Mjelvahammeren near where we live in Norway. I snapped this in the early days of spring before heading back to the US for the summer. We got pretty lucky with the weather.

Last year’s calendar featured her for the month of July bouldering in Hollow Mountain Cave in Australia. You can read about that here: http://www.dreamtimeimages.com/blog/published-sharp-end-publishings-women-of-climbing-calendar.

There are some unreal pictures in this year’s calendar. Heidi and her husband Fred, who run Sharp End, are making this annual calendar better and better.

steve from bristol wedding photographer - Nathan, I visit this page every week hoping there’s some new work from you but there hasn’t been too much lately to my disappointment. I’m sure you’re busy so don’t worry! I’ve only just properly checked out this calendar and there’s some fantastic shots, including this one. Something very serene about it. It must be oddly peaceful when you’re mid way through such a climb and pause for a second to take in the scenery.

Bente Aamodt - WOW!!
HERLIG!

James B. - This is very cool, she has to be very strong to climb like that. Awsome idea for a calender also!
